TAT Launches 20 Low Carbon Tourism Routes Across Thailand's 5 Regions, Promoting Responsible Tourism to Meet Sustainable Development Goals

Global warming and climate change significantly impact the economy, society, and environment. The tourism industry contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and is heavily affected by these changes. Promoting Low Carbon Tourism is a crucial development model for sustainably elevating and reviving the tourism industry and the environment.

The Northern Thailand Tourism Product Division of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recognizes the importance of promoting low carbon tourism and developing stakeholder potential. They have created a project featuring 20 low carbon tourism routes under the concept "20 Low Carbon Lifestyles" These routes emphasize activities that reduce energy use from fuel and chemicals, support organic products and seasonal ingredients, and reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The project has calculated carbon emissions and purchased carbon credits to offset them, creating carbon-neutral tourism routes ready for international markets. This initiative addresses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the environment, communities, and a stable, sustainable economy.

The route design follows the "20 Low Carbon Lifestyle" concept, incorporating current tourism behavior trends. It is divided into four lifestyle categories :
1. Slow Tourism
2. Green Track
3. Gastronomy
4. Healthfulness

Furthermore, TAT focuses on enhancing social and environmental responsibility through these projects by collaborating with domestic and international partners. This push aims to make low carbon tourism a new travel standard, involving local communities in developing sustainable tourism routes and activities. This approach not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also generates long-term income and stability for communities.

This project is a significant step towards achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and raising awareness about responsible tourism. It encourages operators and tourists to protect the environment and participate in driving a green economy that balances economic, social, and environmental development. The ultimate goal is for Thai tourism to grow sustainably and gain recognition on the global stage.
